The United States Capitol is located at one end of the National Mall in
Washington, DC. It houses the meeting chambers of the Senate and the
House of Representatives. The building was started in 1793, and has
had a number of renovations and restorations since. The center of
the Capitol building is the rotunda under the dome, with the House of
Representatives in the south wing and the Senate in the north wing.
Offices, committee rooms, and press galleries are scattered throughout the
building. The United States Capitol is an important symbol of
democracy to the American people. Tours are available.
