Los Angeles, California, was founded in 1781 and is now the second-largest
city in the United States. Often called "The City of Angels,"
Los Angeles covers an area of about 498 square miles, is bisected by a
mountain range, and contains beaches and wetlands as well. It is
known for its freeways and smog. While LA can be accessed by car,
there is also the Port of Los Angeles for shipping and six commercial
airports in the area. As the city has grown and spread, many small
towns have been annexed by the city. One of the most famous is
Hollywood, where the movie industry is based. Los Angeles pro sports
teams include the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
LA is also home to a number of universities such as UCLA and USC.
