Seattle borders the Puget Sound in Washington State, 13 miles south of
the United States-Canadian border. The Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas
separate the city from the Pacific Ocean. Hundreds of parks, lush
and green from the region's notoriously wet climate, have given Seattle
the nickname of the "Emerald City." The sound is home to the
largest number of houseboats in America. But with a population of
over 600,000, Seattle is also a bustling metropolitan center. The
famous Space Needle rises above the cityscape. Seattle has been
home to multiple pop culture icons, including the grunge music movement
of the early 1990s, the popular Frasier television show, and the
Starbucks coffee franchise.
