Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States, home to just over
a million people. Along its coast is nestled Newport, a lovely
seaport city offering gorgeous views, history, and culture. The city
was founded in 1639 as a haven for religious exiles, and numerous
historic churches and homes date back hundreds of years. During the
Gilded Age, families like the Astors and Vanderbilts built mansions along
the waterfront, many of which are now open for tours. The Cliffwalk
follows the Atlantic coastline, providing breathtaking views of both the
ocean and these opulent homes. Visitors today can also take in art
galleries, fine dining, and shopping along the city's cobblestone streets
and wharves.
